I am a big fan of “pixel” art. Not sure on the proper definition, but it is a hand drawn (often with a pen+tablet in Photoshop), pixel by pixel piece of 2D digital art. For example, all the images that show up on the top-left of this page are pieces of pixel art created by a good buddy of mine.
As much as everything we do in games is truly fascinating, creative and needing of great talent, I am truly mesmerized by the attention to detail and depth of what can be produced one pixel at a time. Not to mention that, on the whole, the images are just nice to look at!
I often stop by GFXartist to check out the pic of the day or the latest “elite gallery“. Also, I just put in a pre-order for a new book focused on pixel/digital art called “Expose - Digital Fine Art Book“. And, I am sure to see some cool stuff in action at SIGGRAPH at the end of the month…

When you say pixel art, do you mean any rasterized image? For example, would you consider the comics at Penny Arcade “pixel art”? I’m not sure what I’m trying to get at here aside from clarification as to whether or not pixel art would be anything created in a program like photoshop not using a photograph or 3D rendering as a foundation.

Hmm, good question. I am sure there is a more generally accepted definition, but my particular fascination is with those that “draw” the images pixel by pixel uses “brushes” and other such tools in apps like Photoshop. For example:

Amazing.

Those are excellent links. It’s always interesting to see how different artists work, as the creative processes are different in everyone. Whether you’re a coder who writes pseudo code first or dives right into the hard stuff or a musician who records licks vs improvising until you find a melody you like everyone gets their artistic energy flowing in a different way.
Thanks for the clarification.
