In general, I’m a big fan of awards (well, perhaps not all awards). If done with integrity and credibility, they serve to recognize and reward hard/smart work and inspire others to do the same - and all that good stuff. Aside from the impending phalanx of game awards, the following handful of accolades are quite special in each their own way:
- Ben and Eric (of cancer fighting “Ben’s Game” fame) were recognized with an “Unsung Hero of Compassion” honor by the Dalai Lama. Wow, never saw a pat on the back from the Dalai Lama coming…
- Game pioneer Ralph Baer presented with National Medal of Technology (which is America’s highest honor for science and technology) by President George W. Bush. Again, didn’t see that one coming, with all the usual less-than-love coming from the government…
- High Moon Studios receives workplace excellence award from the San Diego chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management, in large part due to their mature approach to production (ie, like actually using a formal agile methodology, like Scrum) and placing a real emphasis on curbing o/t and maintaining quality of life. Kudos!
